The question above is the tagline for the movie Once.
A story about an Irish busker and a Czech woman in Dublin in a period of just a week. It’s simple, it’s low profile and it’s got some great music. The melody and lyrics, especially, in a couple of songs, are just beautiful, raw even. If you have the album, bak sini, ok.
I’ve only been to Dublin once, ten year ago (omg, it’s been that long?!?). In Once, it is a much colder Dublin weather-wise, but still beautiful.
Unlike Before Sunrise / Sunset, this film is not filled with so many dialogues. Being a musical, it’s filled mostly with, you guessed it, songs. I like how the characters interact and the easy chemistry between the two main players which does remind me of the two Before movies. Kindred spirits, The Guy and The Girl are. They are not without baggages, and that kept it grounded, real.
Memorable scenes: the one with a broken vacuum cleaner is really cute, and one, when the girl played a piano in a darkened studio room.
I never expected the movie to end the way it did, though. Still, life don’t always turn out how you want it to and that made Once more real in a way.
