to be serenaded

A couple of Saturdays ago, I went to my alumni AGM and dinner. At the dinner, we had the good fortune to be entertained by the Glee (not Geli as per the video) Club. They’re Japanese pakciks and the leader is the small gentleman right smack in the middle. Comel.

Oh. They gave me this:

This is truly the end

Book launch

After a morning assignment which ended at noon, I took the rest of the day off to attend the launch of The Quintessential Man: The Story of Tan Sri Azizan Zainul Abidin in Putrajaya. That was the book I had worked on from mid-2005 for over a year.

It seems like a very long time ago. Indeed, two of the people interviewed had passed away – Tan Sri Basir Ismail and Datuk Siew Nim Chee – before they could see the end product.

The hall at Putrajaya Holding hq was full. The late Tan Sri’s family members of course, his close friends, associates from government and reps of all the corporations he was affliated to were there. Even Peter Sauber made a surprise appearance as Petronas, who helped with invitations, wasn’t expecting him to attend and had planned to mail his copy by the end of the week. Not surprising was the absence of Ananda Krishnan while Dr. M is unable to attend as he is away. It would’ve been very interesting if the latter had showed up as it was the current PM who officiated. Heh.

I forgot my handkerchief despite telling myself to bring it in the morning. I knew I’d end up in tears, and I did. I think the guy next to me noticed the wet kleenex in my hand but he wisely chose not to comment on it and offered his congratulations instead.

Puan Sri Noor Ainee was so gracious, thanking me for my work. She didn’t forget her hanky, I see her dabbing the corner of her eyes every now and then.

From the time Azam gave me my own copy, I have been looking forward to people’s response to the book. I didn’t write it, but was invoved in the process of producing it and saw how it evolved from bits of information into different chapters and lastly a coherent piece of writing now able to be scrutinised by anyone.

I’m happy the book is finally out but kinda sad as well. Does that make sense?

From Elviza’s:

Mercy Malaysia has, on 30th December 2008, formed an Emergency Response Assessment Team to face the humanitarian crisis in Gaza strip. The team has been promptly dispatched to Egypt led by President, Datuk Dr. Jemilah Mahmood and Exco Member Norazam Ab. Samah.

The air strike and ground offensive on Gaza – as reported by AlJazeera – have killed more than 700 Palestinians, 219 of which are children. More than 3000 have been wounded.

Therefore, Mercy Malaysia appeals to generous Malaysians to send it cash donations. Contributions will support Mercy Malaysia to procure emergency surgical kits, medicines and hospital equipments to help the hospitals in Gaza.

* Cheque is to be made payable to “MERCY MALAYSIA” and addressed to Mercy Malaysia, Level 2, Podium Block, City Point, Kompleks Dayabumi, Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin, 50050 Kuala Lumpur.
* Cash donations can be made via on-line transmission or deposit at CIMB Bank Account No: 1424-000-6561053.
* Donation form can be downloaded from here.
* Further enquiries are to be directed to +603-22733999 or

Let us make a difference by whatever little we have. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for your generosity.

Rather than passing on e-mails asking to boycott that news channel (that you watch on your satellite tv anyway) or this fast food chain (that you can’t stop your kids from wanting to go because you don’t cook and they love the fries), you might as well send a little something Mercy’s way while you do your internet banking or when you write a cheque for your home loan.

なんだか、去年の今日に思い出した。If I was 10 years younger I might have thrown a tantrum. Or maybe not. I can’t stand my own shrilly voice.

Right now life is mostly about work. There are no “new developments” and I don’t care enough about “juicy gossips” to tell you about it. Unless you wanna know if Madam Governor’s gonna cut interest rates again. I don’t think so.

Entah lah. I try not to discuss about other people because I think there are so many other things I could talk about. Like football. Or Mumbai and Bangkok. If I wanna be silly, I can talk about comic strips and why Hammy should make a cameo at Obama’s inauguration.

Not quite Thursday one liner

At the launch of Dr. M’s Blogging to unblock:

The men’s wallet is always the same so I am always intrigued by what is inside a lady’s handbag.

I have Frank Warren’s signature, and now I have his signature. The two most-read bloggers.

It is difficult to close our ears but there are plugs people can use, or maybe they don’t clean (their ears)

I think the guys in advertising are quite cool…there are some offices around here….they seem quite lepak and cool…the what, me worry? sort…all jeans and torn too….and sneakers…messy hair all…and women call them something like free spirits or something like that.

I didn’t think you even owned a skirt. You should wear them more often, instead of cargo pants.

It was the first buka puasa gathering for me this year. The interesting thing for me was how there were people I know from various affiliations (blogs, work, study) at one venue. A few old bosses, japanese grads, MRT regulars and not-so-new friends.
